A Survey on Artificially Aborted Women¢¥s Attitudes to the Practice and Sequela in Suwon Area

Abstract
Artificial abortion has been generally practiced to women as a means of family planning in Korea, however, the practice has some problems because its harmful effects upon maternal health. In order to elucidate to what extend the artificial abortion affects maternal health mentally and physically the present survey was carried out on three hundred women aborted artificially who visited the Suwon Public Health Center or the Suwon Provincial Hospital from December 1, 1972 to January 31 1973 by giving each of them a form of questionnaire to be filled.
The results can be summarized as follows.
I. The highest rate of artificial abortion appeared in the age group of 30 to 34 presumably due to the fact that the women belonging to the age group have already the satisfied number of child.
2. Artificial abortion was somewhat negatively correlated with education and occupational status, being more common among the lower educated women having no job than the higher status groups.
3. The most frequent number of child for a family was three, indicating that the national family planning has been successfully conducted in view of family-size control.
4. Regarding the kind of clinic, most of the observed women were aborted by obstetricians or gyne¡þcologists of a private clinic (59%) or general hospital (24%), and by midwive¢¥s help (9%) but still minority of them was aborted by unlicenced doctor (6%) or at their own houses (2%) though it is illegal. In view of method of abortion, about 78 percent of aborted women were performed by curettment, 12percent of them by injection of medicine, 8 percent of them by intrauterine chemicals and the remainder by the other unauthorized chemicals.
5. It is recommended that a woman to be aborted should be accompanied by her husband or intimate
relative because most aborted women expressed sorrowful feelings after the performance.
6. Guilty feelings after abortion were very common among the aborted women (82%) regardless of
their religion and they felt guilt to the aborted creature rather than sin to God.
7. Majority of the observed women did not want more conception except the special cases in need of
more children, however, they intend to undertake repeated abortion when necessity demands.
8. The aborted w6rfi6h¢¥ who do not want more conception are very common to use oral pifte ad 1:,means of contraception.
9. The abortion was mostly decided by agreement between the husband and his wife, however, there are considerable number of cases that the abortion was decided only by wive¢¥s intention(24%), indicating that women cower is being extended in their family.
10. As the lumbago in women follows after the practice of abortion and it is more severe for the
unrested women, so it is emphasized for the aborted women to rest fully after thepractice.
11. Bleeding was the most common side effect after the abortion and also at the early stage of reconception after abortion, and progesterone commonly used to prevent abortion in the latter cases
seemed to cause deformities. From the above results of the present survey it is obvious that the artificial abortion affects the maternal health mentally and physically, therefore, it is needed to enlighten women to have more enough knowledge of abortion in view of their heath.
